Yes there do seem to be variations : I have not the reference to hand but recall a couple of New Kingdom rods (I suppose others will be familiar with these examples) : in the order of ennead symbols, on one rod Geb is omitted and Osiris slips from seventh to sixth place.
There have been discussions here on the origins of the cubit, particularly on the difficulty in establishing without question its anthropomorphic base; its possible metrological origin; and potential clues in its divisions to arithmetical concepts. As to the allocation of symbols it has been proposed that the star was associated with surveying. Have any other of the symbols been interpreted? Is there consensus as to inscription and division common to most cubits? And what of those short marks crossing finger divisions? Why were these particular divisions emphasized?
