I was reading Herodotus II 175 about a red granite chamber brought from Aswan to Sais during the reign of Amasis.
It weighed 580 tons, took 3 years to move, and 2000 boatmen to move it down the Nile.
I have a couple of translations of this that differ, one calls it 'a chamber', and the other refers to it as 'a shrine'.
It's possible that the identification of it as a shrine comes from the fact that several red granite 'Naos' statue alcoves were found in the 19th century, although none of these were anywhere near the dimensions of the Amasis one described by Herodotus.
So I am unsure if Herodotus actually called it a shrine at all, or whether it was simply chamber and the designation shrine was appended later erroneously.
Does anyone have an original Greek version of Herodotus, or access to one?

I've also seen this, or these, referred to as 'The Green Naos', for some reason, I have no idea why.
