The two photos showing the grill in the original version of the Edgar's book (1910) are taken before and after debris was removed and looking carefully at the originals there's nothing to suggest that there's anything amiss. There's no mystery here.
Morton wrote in a letter following his visit in the 1920s that he'd had the descending corridor completely cleared but I don't know when the grill was removed.
