Hello Lee,

I suspect that this door was removed in recent years as a prelude to the work carried out by the Egyptian authorities to make the Subterranean Chamber safe for visitors (e.g. the placing of metal railings around the Shaft in the floor).

According to John Edgar the iron grill gate was installed by M. Maspero.
I think this puts the date in the late 1880s.
As far as I can recall, Petrie (in Egypt 1880-1883?) does not mention the gate.
