OK. It appears I got some bum information here. I should
have asked when the picture of the area was posted earlier
but wasn't sure what was being shown.
The point stands though that there are a lot more than one
way to skin a cat and anyone who can build the Great Pyra-
mid should have little difficulty sealing it without having
to tunnel through their own work.
It should be noted that the bottom of the grand gallery is
tapered in (as is, I believe, the corresponding part of the
trial passages) so this was apparently planned from the begin-
ning.
I asked about the grotto:

You answered:
The fact that it goes straight to the descending passage is a pretty good hint.
I really appreciate all the help you've offerred as well
as correcting my errors. This answer though, doesn't ap-
ply to any of the questions.
Part of the grotto extends into the bottom of the pyramid
which might imply there was already a tunnel leading up to
it since it was of some unknown importance to them. It cer-
tainly had nothing to do with ventilation before or after
they tunneled through the masonry to get to it from the top.
This would have drawn air from the very same passage as the
bottom of the ascending passage. It would be ineffective
at circulating air in the lowest chamber since it was too far
away. It seems likely this lowest chamber was abandoned be-
fore the tunneling was done anyway. Of course it would serve
well to ventilate the grotto were there any such need.
