I think the overall iconography can only put particular components into proper context, and with that thus far they have come up with no consideration.
The suggestion that the 'ladder' component probably develops in time to hieroglyphic N36, Mer, representative of a Canal or the Nile is interesting, but the prototype symbol looks like a ladder still to me, and the possibility that a portion of land could be indicated by it, was how i related it to a portion of the horizon.
It could be considered perhaps in terms of the figure having been seen in some sense as floating/swimming down the old mystical canal, as it were, that would be a variation upon theme, but my inclination is that these would be later elaborations developed in relationship to the signs...though of course i'm no expert.
