I don't care if we have 1 a 100 a 1000 or zero confirmed identities of mummies. The point is that DNA and mtDNA is a source of information about who's who. You can have a 1000 DNA samples numbered 1-1000 and based on the results you can tell that 998 is related to number 37, 103, 287 and nobody else. Not only that it can give you insight into diseases, other than Marfans that they might have had,it can show migration routes for their ancestors, I'm sure more than that. Recently they found out that all domestic cats are derived from a single species, they've been able to trace the origin and evolution cats based on DNA evidence. And how did it start? Because some hunter was shooting "wild" scottish cats, that were erroneously thought to be native to Scotland and going into extinction and he wanted to know how they could tell the difference from regular domestic cats. The tale (no pun intended) is a lot more complex than that. But the principle remains the same. These mummies represent a genetic time capsule of what life was like about 5K years ago or so. As such who knows what other secrets are locked up in them? We'll never know until we start testing, but apparently it's much more fun to argue in circles endlessly rather than get down to the hard work of testing and interpreting the results.
DNA is a start in the direction in that it gives us almost irrefutable evidence about who is related to whom.
