I like a hybrid:

"Continuing investigation that uses observation, hypothesis testing, measurement, experimentation, logical argument and theory building to seek natural explanations for the world around us"

As opposed to "desperately seeking any old tripe that will shore up my belief in an all powerful, interventionalist God and the literal interpretation of a motley collection of Judaic historical and religious scripts".
