Neither of them are really appropriate to "speak publicly on this issue of evolution" as they work in theoretical physics
In terms of the "...in order to rebut the fundies" I'm don't really see what there is for the scientists to rebut. I personally think mainstream christianity needs to start addressing it more. Thats the only way they may start changing their strange insistence that god can be proven to exist through science. Of course that is a repsonse to an attitude within some enclaves of science that the existence of god has been 'disproven' by science.
This idea that you have to chose between science or religion is the main problem. Science can comment on peoples interpretation of Genesis, it cannot say that it was not inspired by the creator of the universe. And equally if people are going to make such a big fuss about a literal interpretation of Gensis, then they need to treat Leviticus with just as much literal rigour
