Wow, they found Kokopelli in Canada?! That flute player really got around! lol
He is a fascinating deity and it's amazing how many people are really charmed by his image. You can't go very far around this area without seeing Kokopelli somewhere. My husband won't let me wear my Kokopelli pendant anymore--he's concerned that perhaps the old deity still has some power, lol.
The Kokopelli Christmas tree ornament is pretty interesting since obviously he wouldn't have celebrated Christmas. Then again, one could rationalize that Kokopelli would probably have enjoyed the whole affair considering there would be music, gifts, feasting and celebration. Perhaps it's my own viewpoint but I see him as bit of a party animal.
The complaint about the Heb Sed flash is interesting. It's kind of the same thing. The only way that I could see the two situations as being different is that I don't believe the Egyptians still actively worship these deities? If I'm wrong, please correct me. For many of the tribes out here, Kokopelli is still a deity. That makes him an active deity. At what point are we infringing on another groups beliefs and when is it okay?
My husband figured the Kokopelli doll for our daughter was fine. He rolled his eyes at the cookie cutter. I asked him what others in the tribe might think if I made Kokopelli cookies and he said that there might be a few Navajo grandmothers that would possibly disapprove. But of course, he loved the Kokopelli tshirt with them in sunglasses, tshirts and shorts...like he's one to talk! lol
In hindsight, I wish I had taken a picture of the tshirt. It was sheer commercialism. I don't even recall the Kokopellis on it even playing any flutes!
