I live in a part of Nova Scotia ( Canada ) that the people of the nearest large town (120 km) call the " dark side ". I don 't think any body knows we live there except the taxman ! There are only 2 roads ( in need of repair ) one from west to east (going nowhere ) and the other going north (as we are at the end of a bay ). There are about 12000 people living in a 20 km radius so its not crowded .
the Hub is between 2 bridges spanning 2 rivers originally called East and West river ( 3 km apart ) . There are 2 mid size grocery stores , hardware store 2 service stations , a bank ,copshop , a hospital 2 small motels with restaurants and not much else . There is a small port for fishermen and further up the bay a larger port where a cargo ship loads wood chips ( the only industry in the area ) off to Japan once a month . One of the grocery store is giving away a DVD player with the purchase of 15 movie rentals .
Having lived in Paris , London , Edinburgh , Quebec city , Ottawa and Vancouver I am perfectly Happy here . What with Internet , satellite TV we have all the conveniences that we need for entertainment ( watched Arsenal- Man U last tuesday ) . Yesterday my wife received the new sears catalogue on a CD rom and she goes to town once a month to keep in touch with civilization ! I ,once , was 2 years without seeing a traffic light !
There is hardly any crime in the area and if I have caught a couple young guys , on my walks , hiding to smoke a joint ( scared them ) , there are no shady characters in the area and in the summer our doors are always wide open ; No one is in a rush , people greet strangers the same way they greet their neighbours and recently my wife was commenting as to the friendliness of the people who go out of their way to help you .
So you see Stephanie , Life in a small town or village has also its advantages and who cares if you miss on the latest technology, before you know it the latest technology will be obsolete .
