Thanks to Damian I recently rediscovered a childhood favorite - must have been
a favorite for me to remember it so well - 'Queen of the Dawn' by H. Rider Haggard
and was amazed that I could have worked my way through that dense, faux-archaic
19th c. prose at ten or so. On the other hand I also managed to get through Ivanhoe and
the Talisman at a similar age....no wonder I didn't have any problems with Tolkien's
'epic' style!
