I agree Stephanie, movies are to entertain, the problems start when so many of them do not. That's why I began using reviews in the first place. Yet that is not exactly a perfect system either. I guess the best thing one could do is find a reviewer or friend whose tastes somewhat compliment your own and have them recommend the ones they think would interest you, then you view them without review or discussion. The old "know thyself". As for accuracy, it probably helped me that I knew so little about weather systems, etc. The special effects were outstanding, so without being annoyed by poor science, I was free to just soak up the rest. Whereas Darkuser or Alex would not. The plot may have been shaky, but I was too busy liking the individual characters to care. Alex, I saw Hidalgo and was basically bored. I thought the characterizations were cardboard cutouts, and the acting unconvincing. But I guess it just depends on individual perspective. When I found out about the related scandal I was even less impressed.
