I don’t understand these comments, Graham! Admittedly, I’m not convinced that a standard unit measuring 2.72 feet was used to survey these monuments; and I have some doubts about Thom’s methodology. Nevertheless, if the human pace – or a standard unit based on a human pace - were used as a unit for setting out these monuments, surely 32.64 inches – or the Broch Yard of 33.05 inches (although I’m not sure what MacKie’s view of it is these days) – might be argued to be a reasonable approximation? What do you mean by “it’s too good for the rod”? You mean it’s too small a unit to be used as a standard unit for surveying a relatively large monument like a megalithic henge?

Hmmm. A great many puzzled researchers in the Thom family, then … However, if the Megalithic Yard had them all stumped, and if you think it was too small a unit to be used (still don’t know if I’ve understood you properly here), then what would be your view on the longer units that I mentioned in my previous post? Or do you think that there was a completely different standard unit that so far has escaped detection? Or, as so commonly argued, was there no standard unit at all? But, in that case, why do several of the monuments (some circular, some not) surveyed by Thom share common measurements with at least one other monument? Or is this merely coincidence?
