I don't know when they're having fireworks, except they used to have them with the Lion Dance in Chinatown, IIRC. It was part of the New Year celebration. Some Chinese restaurants in NY used to throw banquets and had really great Chinese New Year parties. In more outlying areas around NY/New England, a lot of recent Chinese immigrants head into the big cities to meet up with relatives and to celebrate in Chinatown, so some restaurants are forced to close.
