Ignoring all the other tangents I'd so love to pursue, but lack the time, I'll simply focus on the question you ask in a statement form about asking myself why the seeming obsession these days with the end of the world...
My answer, in brief, is that it is nothing new. (The fact that there is nothing new in humans in over 2000 years is a side tangent I'd love to pursue, but won't at this time.
that's right - the obsession with apocalypticism is nothing new.
I could write 500 words or so on that right here, but alas the belief that it is a new concept is a recurring belief throughout history... even predating Christianity and possibly predating the abrahamic faiths in general ;0
More simply, here's a great article, plus my two cents: "Study History closely, then interpret what you are reading with Occam's Razor"

Oh, and on the tangent of never anything new...
1) The obsession with mathematics to see the hidden truths? Absolutely nothing new...
2) There is nothing new in human concepts for 2000 years? We had steam power in 0AD and ignored it. We did use hydraulics... for conning people in religious aspects, and not much else.
Seriously... nothing new. Even my own beloved 'scientific method' concept... is used by the first developer of the 'prism' for bending light...
That, to all my dearest friends, is how the world will end.. in stagnation, by not expanding, and with a whimper and not a bang...
