I agree with Kat on this one. :-)
In fact, Dec 12, 2012 is only one of a number of future doomsdays,
which a person can choose to be afraid of as listed in "The Future"
at [
www.abhota.info].
As shown in that list, doomsday is predicted by various people as
happening well before Dec 12, 2012 at various time in either 2006
(2 different times), 2007 (4 different times), 2008 (2 different
times), 2009, 2010, and 2011 (2 different times). If any one of
these predctions of a global doomsday is correct, life on Earth,
as we know it, including being able to get fast food at either
McDonalds, Wendys, or KFC, will have ceased to exist before Dec.
12, 2012. If doomsday does not come on Dec. 12, 2012, the writers
of boring fiction can always make money by writing about the end
of the world coming as argued by other people in either 2017,
2020, 2023, 2025, 2026, 2033, 2035, 2037, or 2040.
I suggest that John Hoopes and other people look at the list
of failed doomsdays in "A Brief History of the Apocalypse" at
[
www.abhota.info]. This web page has a list of failed
doomsdays no different than Dec 12, 2012.

Not on this list is the possibility of getting whacked by asteroid
Asteroid 2002NT7 on February 19, 2019 and asteroid 1997XF around
October 29, 2029.
