1. Suggestions that the whole thing was the brainchild of the notorious Joe Mulhattan appeared very shortly after the original article, IIRC. (Also, newspapers weren't too bothered about accurate reporting in those days, and didn't necessarily go in for fact checking).
2. Information accessible to us now via the Internet wouldn't have been available when the article first came out.

IIRC, you wrote to them about 20-odd years ago. Again, more information has probably come to light since that time.
