Apparently, his theories are still perceived as controversial (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thor_Heyerdahl).
Having glanced briefly through some of his work, though, I get the impression that some of his conclusions were based on some very outdated sources, so it's hardly surprising that they don't fit in with present day thinking. But, in the mid-20th century, that was presumably all that was available to him.
