The CLDS (Mormons) settled New Mexico in measurable numbers in 1846...

Furthermore one of the reasons they came was the exact attacks you mention back in Missouri. Hell, Missouri governor issued an extermination order!!
So they fled to Illinois, and just a decade later they were basically attacked again.

They were not chased out of New Mexico & Utah, & the 4 corners. But they had already been burned twice, what they really needed was a nice certifiable claim to the land so no one could push them out again...

Lucky proof of their doctrine arose in, among other things, this stone...
Just makes me go "hmmm" when someone has access & need & their prayers are answered...
