<HTML>The thought that he had motors, etc... needs to be removed.
Remember, we are looking at an eyewitness account which said there were no electric motors, nor more advanced block & tackle rigs used. This gentleman, in his book, "Mr. Can't is Dead" clearly shows the exact same hoists that I have pictured, and states that they are the ones Ed used.
The noise of power hoists et al would have been very obvious... especially in 1938, when such motors were EXTREMELY loud, as they would have to have been gasoline driven... there was no electricity at the CC.
Good thoughts, but the facts don't bear them out.
Ed's goal, according to my research, was to do something extraordinary. Whatever means he used were necessary in order to create an extraordinary monument. He created an extraordinary structure, and then created an extraordinary story (his Sweet Sixteen) to go with it. He then opened his doors to the public.
I don't care who you are... anyone who could build this enormous structure using completely substandard tools deserves our respect and attention.
(And just to let you know... this silence is driving me absolutely freaking CRAZY! His accomplishments are SO scientifically significant it is unbelievable! Yet, here I sit... mouth shut while the world fumbles around. God, I hate this. As soon as this wedding thing is over, I'm going to pour a 2.5 ton block and just raise the damn thing on video. That'll settle it once and for all! Pardon my frustration, but I'm just about OVER this "wait until we get everything set" tactic!)
