One day I asked him why he never attende the movies anymore. He went in to great detail to tell me that the pictures were good, but the sound was confusing to him, and he no longer enjoyed them. The fact was Ed was a grown man when he migrated to America and he evidently thought in Latvian. During the silent movies, he had time to see the picture, then read the words that were shown on the screen, then translate the words into Latvian. The "talkies" gave him no such opportunity.
