<HTML>As we've seen recently, researchers in Britain have been showing that the "soul" exists independently of the body. (Based on documented, scientifically investigated accounts of "out of body" near-death experiences).
Science is providing a comfort for those who seek it, looking at the phenomenon that is "death" , and giving us a sense of permanence that we previously only had if we "believed" in God and Heaven.
Science gives us enormous comfort... we understand things like gravity and the weather and meteors and explosions and radiation. These things can be influenced by us now, and make our lives more comfortable, as a result. These "scientific findings" were only achieved as a result of the desire to protect us and shelter us and make us more comfortable.
Your lines between religion, and science AS religion, are a lot more fuzzy than you might like to think. Read "Cosmos" by Carl Sagan, and put yourself in the shoes of a 40th century researcher. What you will see is a funny old piece of literature, making a feeble attempt to understand the universe by casting "Intellect" in the role of "God"... that is all. It casts "Scientists" as Prophets. It casts "Creationists" as Heretics. And it casts Carl Sagan as the One True Prophet.
Oh, yeah. I see that book causing REAL problems in 2000 years.
