I wouldn't say it is a religion, definitly not to people who know what science, its goals and its methods are. I think we can agree on that ?
There is on the other hand a huge part of the population which holds current scientific theories (not science) for truth as holly as a religious belief, I know many people who are like this, and to be honnest, I was like this for a good part of my life too. Unfortunatly there are a lot of scientists who forget about the distinction, they know about it, they just forget it. Note that I am not pointing fingers and in fact, I have no problem about that, as I have no problem about my grandmother being deeply religious.
All in all, my position is that if your motivation for doing science is religion, then so be it, as long as you apply the scientific method... Like Kepler for instance.
