To quote James again (Sunken Kingdom, 1995): "Plato himself did not recognise any resemblance between Atlantean and Cretan civilisation. Although Plato did not know 'Minoan' civilisation as we do from archaeology, the Greeks were heir to numerous traditions concerning the wonders of ancient Crete and the empire of Minos. Many things were remembered (correctly or otherwise) in Greek legend: the bull cult; the marvellous palace; the wealth of its kings, their laws, organized navy technological expertise, overseas colonies and struggle with Athens. Plato was well aware of all these traditions, and wrote a book entitled
Minos, featuring the legendary king as the archetypal lawgiver." (71)
