The suggestion that Crete might have inspired Plato's conception of Atlantis was first mooted nearly a century ago in 1909 by K.T. Frost. But there are problems with this theory. One, to quote Peter James (Sunken Kingdom, 1995), "is that Plato himself did not recognise any resemblance between Atlantean and Cretan civilisation." (71) Another problem with the Minoan-Atlantis theory "is the date. Plato stated that the war between Athens and Atlantis took place 9,000 years before the visit of Solon to Egypt (c. 565 BC), which takes it back to roughly 9600 BC, long before the rise of Minoan civilisation." (72).
