Hi hans,

In the late 19th century and early 20th the Phoenicians were considered to be the classic Semite traders - and as such suffered badly in the racially charged scholarship of the period.

1911 is almost right at the height of that period.

Up to about the 1880s they were actually very popular in Britain, but after that they suffered from a very negative propaganda campaign in historical criticism circles.

Its possible that anything that suggested a long antiquity for the Phoenicians was undermined
