I would hate to see this happen. It would put academics at the mercy of politicians, for a start. Think of what would happen to the teaching of evolution in some American universities!

Tenure protects dissent. It doesn't always work, and it sometimes works in ways we might not like, but if tenure was abolished I think we'd lose something precious we might not get back.
