You point out, rightly, that Bauval was a professional engineer not an Egyptologist.

I would have thought that most Egyptologists have little chance of becoming archaeo-astronomers, where most professor engineers have the ability to become archaeo-astronomers.

Professional engineers are very good at applied mathematics.

Academics that I have listened to and talked to in this field, actually graduated in physics, but are now 'Egyptologists'. For example, Professor Steele, at Brown University, graduated from Durham University.

The point is that Robert Bauval had a background in construction engineering, which meant he had a good foundation upon which to study archaeo-astronomy. Its not a particularly difficult field for some-one with the right education. I graduated in chemistry from Durham University, and I dare say that archaeo-astronomy is within my moderate compass without claiming to be an expert.
