It never occurred to me that the answer was not mathematical, Anthony ... I thought that it was a logical sequence of numbers, and that perhaps one could work it out by, er, quadratic equations or some such (not that I can remember how to manipulate the beastly things).

But, anyway, the important points about this question have already been made in other posts ...
