Not really.
Count how many granite stones are required for 16 layers...should be less than 6,000.
If you have/do venture to the G3 site you will see the precision and smoothing of each stone's fitting to all four adjacent stones (sides, above and below) yet the outer surface/face was intentionally left rough in texture.
Also, each stone has a formed outer "lip" to ensure accuracy of fit, positioning and maintaining of overall slope. The back top of these stones are overlapped by inner core material affirming the statement that these stones were set in place as construction continued in height.
Actually, it would be more applicable to replace your choice of word "enormous" with that of "artistic".
