Before you come up with some kind of overall plan at Giza wherein also the Sphinx was incorporated, the AE simply found that the natural outcrop of lime-stone out of which they carved the Sphinx, was very convenient to form a statue. That's all. Just like Khufu choose his location only because the natural protrusion over which he built his tomb provided a very solid foundation and firm locking unto the plateau and because the quarries at Dashur were exhausted. Khafre and Menkaure just followed his succesful example. The AE learned a lot from the Bent-pyramid disaster, that was built on desert-sands alone ...
