I do not have an opinion on whether the builders of G3 preferred one position over another. I am not aware of any evidence to support that view. I'm sure that there were a number of criteria the builders faced. The builders would have had a general idea of the size of pyramid they were to build. They knew the constraints of the plateau. And, under my theory, they wanted to relate the new work to the old. There are a variety of geometric alternatives that would have allowed the builders latitude in the position and size. But, I am not aware of anything that suggests one position over another.
It is interesting that the lines from G1 converge at the 1/4 point of G3 rather than a corner, base line center, or center of the pyramid. That suggests to me that perhaps size or topography necessitated a compromise in the geometric relation.
