But why on earth would the aliens have wanted the AE to encode earth measurements, and speed of light measurements, in a stone tomb? I mean, what's the

They were
aliens, for goodness' sake ... They'd come from Alpha Centauri or some even more distant cosmoverse somewhere, in their incredibly sophisticated machine using computers so incredibly sophisticated that no one, even today, could recognise them as computers .... and they want the ignorant subject races to do all this encoding business?
I mean, for unthinkably wise and knowledgeable beings from far beyond the stars, they really were a bit three egg-sandwiches short of a picnic ...
