I agree, the symmetry of the indentations on all four sides seems to nullify the idea of form by the impact of stones knocked down from the top, I can imagine tumbling, smashing, and irregular effects as a result. The accuracy of the indentations isn’t perfect, but it wouldn’t be necessary for the core masonry composition to provide what many have suggested to be intentional by the builders to add support for the tallest area of each sides facing stones.

I emailed the author over a month ago with questions, never got a response.
