I don't think they were encoding anything, rather they were interested in Maat. Pi is an irrational ratio just like the diagonal of a square, the latter was used by the Egyptians to form half area measures (Remen); 1 Setat (Grk; Aroura) area = 100 x 100 rc, 1 Remen area equals 1/2 Setat area... via the 100 x 100 rc square's diagonal.

I also think that the two most prominent elements in the sky, the sun and moon, caused many cultures around the world to create calendars, rituals and temples. where the built them and how big they were mattered to them, and since we're on a spinning planet with a moon, orbiting the sun, there will always exist natural byproducts related to seasonal alignments and our planets equator.

We can >>guess<< that whatever term the Egyptians had for creating a circle; pi was a natural byproduct, we can also >>guess<< by the grave goods (pots, bowls, cups etc.) and the elements used in architecture that the artisans used a system/technique that would produce replication of perfect circles because those are the results in evidence. It doesn't take a genius to wrap a string around a round object to find a measurement, it's whether or not they divided that length by the diameter of the object to understand pi... we have no idea if they perfected it to be an irrational constant like they did with a square's diagonal.

There are two physical exterior incidents with two different pyramids at Giza that show pi, but they are dependent on knowing the length of the royal cubit employed, something very few have stepped up to the plate to make the case. For example Petrie published, I think in 1877 or so a book entitled "Inductive Metrology" where he employs probability of a probabilities... essentially MOE (margin of error) and with the Old Kingdom royal cubit he arrived at 20.62 +/- .005 inches as its weighted mean, which very few if any can argue against. Archaeologically the only pyramid at Giza with a 100% agreed upon royal cubit length planned by the builder is Khafre's pyramid at 411 using Petrie's 20.62 inches. The irony is modern Egyptologists believe (they don't know) Khufu's pyramid was intended to be 440 royal cubits but this doesn't match Petrie's weighted mean for the cubit, 440 requires a royal cubit of 20.61 inches. Here are the Mean archaeologic results of Petrie (1881), Cole (1935) and Dash-Paulson (2015) for Khufu's pyramid base...

Cole.................. 9069.45 inches
Dash-Paulson... 9069.42 inches

Mean of all........ 9069.27 inches

9069.27 inches divided by 20.62 = 439.82 royal cubits
9069.27 inches divided by 20.61 = 440 royal cubits

440 divided by 140 = 3.1428 or 22/7
439.8 divided by 140 = 3.1415 *this is one of the two instances of pi on pyramid dimensions [provides 19,600 squares of pi in Khufu's base area], the other is much more esoteric and is found by using Khafre's pyramid diagonal as a circle's diameter...

3.1415 x 581.2417 = 5 x 365.2

where as 2pi x 280 (khufu's pyramid height) = 4 x 439.82, which equals Khufu's base perimeter... is this how you square a circle???
