In fact you missed out the second of the two sentences, which was important both with respect to the procedure and to the Ramesseum diagram: "An alignment of the two stars near the handle of the Big Dipper, pointing towards Ursa Minor, indeed runs past Thuban. When the Big Dipper was to the west of Thuban in the night sky then Thuban would have been very close to transiting the meridian and therefore close to true north"
This arrangement in the sky could very well resemble the Ramesseum diagram. Remember that there are vertical plumb lines involved with any of these procedures when dealing with the exterior sides of the monument.
