I think you are wrong about the vertical lines being grooves. If you look at the small pyramids in front of G3 and the westside of G3 you can see small piles of sand on top of the core stones. With strong winds and lots of sand blowing around you get small sand dunes building up on the pyramids. So not grooves just a play of light and shadow on small sand piles.
