I have no doubt that this culture would take full advantage of its architecture to reinforce their belief system.
Its certainly a beautiful temple in an almost perfect (for it) setting.
With an average daily motion of .22 of 1 degree a 2 degree aperture displaying a 1/2 degree object should show some or all of that object for 9 sunrise mornings. Only one of those days the object would rise truly centered in the aperture.
I'm a tad more fascinated by the "light boxes". Assuming they are part of the initial design the double aperture would line up January 27th to alight the inner sanctuary.
Does anyone know if that day had any significance to the AE? The rest of the year the light boxes would allow a weak, dim light to penetrate. This is a common design strategy for the AE temples, lighting the inner sanctuary in a deep twilight only, as they conceived the Isle of Creation appeared originally.
But that one day a year the sunlight beamed in must have been visually impressive, bathing the inner sanctuary in what they might have perceived as a recreation of the very first sunrise.
