It depends on the deity. In general, they're kind of "kit bashed" from earlier animistic spirits. For instance, in the Levant (which includes part of Egypt), there are old traces of what may be a "bull cult" as well as goddess figurines (I'm thinking of Catalhyouk). Is Hathor (one of the oldest goddesses) a manifestation of this combination?
Who knows? Right now, we don't have enough evidence.

And as a reflection of their society. When they got kings, they figured the gods must also have kings.

You should start by taking the pyramid texts apart and finding out when they were written (they cover a 3,000 year span of time... which saw many cultural and philosophical changes) and where they came from (different areas had different cultural nuances.)
