And yet even in recorded history the entire Native American plains tribes participated in the hunt. The females did not stay home and stoke the campfires.

Admittedly the younger men actually did the slaying, the rest butchering, gathering hides, etc. But none was "safe". A wounded buffalo could easily break back along the trail of the herd and endanger the processors.
