It is undecided whether Punt (p-w-n-t) is the name of an actual place or a general term for a large area South of Egypt. The word Punt is often associated with other names such as "lands of the gods" There is a good article which the founder of this board, Katherine, circulated recently which argues for Punt no further away than Sudan, an area South East of the 5th cateract or East of the 6th cateract, named Kassala.

The land of Punt.
K.A. Kitchen

How accurate this is I can't say but I agree with Kitchen that one of the keys to locating Punt is the flora such as frankincense and myrrh which from the earliest times was in great demand. The original habitat of myrrh is unknown but there are traces still to be found in the wild areas of South Yemen near the Red sea coast. Frankincense appears more widespread but the best quality still comes from the limestone soils of Dhofar, a region in Oman. It may have some bearing on the fact that Hatsepshut probably replanted in the same soil.

While the journey to Punt might be South down the Red sea coast it's not known exactly where Hatsepshut docked. It may have been several places.
