I believe MJ has a good point.
What evidence do we have to rule out a pre-existing well, a pre-existing shaft and a pre-existing subterranean chamber. The well is self explanatory as would be the shaft leading down to an underground chamber. They don't necessarily have to be concurrent constructions. The naturally occurring rocky outcrop may have been a basin for collecting OK or E-dyn rain water and the subterranean chamber with its extended shafts and pits in the making a very early rock cut depository ... of kings.
