Some blocks were chiseled out. The majority of the core masonry fits this category. Others were slab cut. Long rows of blocks were often left in situ and then slab cut to a manageable size to transport via barge across from the quarries at Tura. Honing was only necessary when they were transitioning from one natural row to another. Well, that and the bottoms of them needed to be perfectly flat... but that's what a slab saw does.
