Hi Jon ...
Considering the controversy why is the sand not cleared, corners exposed, volunteers gathered for the removal of the sand, theodilites obtained and a final and accurate to the speed of light measurement obtained. Would seem not an insurmountable problem and getting voluteers I am sure would be no problem.

PS: By the way have you returned to The Louvre yet ? Any and all pictures of paintings by Poussin would be greatly appreciated. And see if you can get a picture of "The Allegory of The Coronation of Celestine Vth" which at all reports I have been able to gather resides at The Louvre and which now, courtesy of Karl Hammer and "friend" now resides in the public domain.
Cheers
