They are the original Egyptians, along with Arabic Egyptians. The word 'Copt' comes from the Greek word for Egypt.

The problem with Coptic history is that they claim to be the first Christians, but that is problematic. There is no clear evidence of Christian influence on the Copts until the third or fourth century CE.
