I think you've hit thec more introverted desire;
"If I believe Uncle Waldo went and joined the ancestors then I don't have to face my own mortality; that I will be dust and forgotten in 50 years. Uncle Waldo can get me into the not-nowhere if I show him his due respect."
It's easier to believe in "The Ancestors" as a fire escape clause from one's own perpetual "nowhere". I see this as in sync with the workers on the pyramids believing they were assuring their own immortality by working on the God-Kings immortality.
