I wasn't familiar with any hydraulic projects at Luxor except for a retaining wall along the river to prevent flooding.
I believe the dam to which you refer was built near Giza across the Nile without a spillway and overtopped during construction with extremely disastrous results. Is this the same one? The one to which I refer was an earthen dam which was stone faced.
While not on topic it would round out the old projects of this nature to mention the canal into the Fayuum with a 1% grade. There was a dam on each end and these were worked to fill the lake and maintain a flow in the Nile during the dry season. The canal dates to around 2200BC but I believe the dams were constructed later.
