This was so important to the ancients that it was virtually
the name of the year in their records. Each year they would
name their years and these measurements would appear at the
end. They apparently varied from about 12' to zero. The large-
er numbers came early in the first dynasty and they dropped over
time. Even the birth of Min is noted in year "7".

There's no logical connection to the Nile flood since there
would have to be negative numbers to indicate distance from
the high floods. It's highly improbable it would relate to
deposition from the flood since the number is so very high.
Even the deepest cuts where mud was mined would not get so much
deposit and the number would be of little interest anyway since
there would not be a lot of correlation to other areas anyway.

There was no horizon in the valley so in all probability when
they refer to horizons they are talking about the land on either
side of the valley. One of the Gods in the PT which could be
taken for Min was the god of the horizonS.

Just as one can measure air pressure in inches of mercury, water
pressure can be measured in cubits of something (even water).
Whatever was being measured was critical to the way they remem-
bered the time so was probably extremely important to their daily
lives. If this is pressure (of anything) then the obvious question
is how was this pressure generated.

It's surprising to an outsider that there don't even appear to
be theories on the subject.
