It's true that you really can find out ancestral information with a DNA test. Eager people have built up expectations about this that aren't correct, and it aggravates the scientists no end to try and correct some of the misapprehensions.

Here's a basic page on genetics and geneaology over on About.com:

Here's an interesting page where a student at a university ordered one of these tests and then discusses it in a neat little table:

At another university there's a project that asks folks with the surname, "West" to participate in these studies. The also have some pages that explain this:
